PAÇO DAS ESCOLAS, UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA |
Situated approximately 200km north of Lisbon and 120km south of Porto, Coimbra is the capital of the municipality of Coimbra, the subregion of Baixo Mondego and also the Centro region of Portugal. It is a city that is full of history, dating back to Roman times (who called it Aeminium). During the 12th and 13th centuries it was also the capital of Portugal.
These days it is known principally as the University City, playing home to the oldest continuous university in the country (also one of the oldest in Europe), which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. It really is a beautiful city and well worth visiting if you are ever in Porto or Lisbon.
